You can open .dat files using any text editor but that doesn't mean you can modify them using any text editor. Depends on the file. You should look into Hex Editing. There's a pinned tutorial in Tutorials section.

Go to //var/mobile/Containers/Bundle/Applications/ModernCombat5 and see how big the binary file is? Also, did you activate it in settings?
