You can try iPhoneCake.com They might have an older version of the app you're looking for. And also, some apps force you to update to the latest version before you can use it.

They might have checks on the file size of the archive. Even if you add one more character, it would re-download it. You should monitor somehow on what the app is doing when the download begins after the update. Charles Proxy maybe?
