nope. Its how it worked for me on my ipad 1st gen. dont know about you guys but i am running 5.1.1 . If that app had previously worked on iOS 5 then it will surely work on ipad 1st gen even if it will be an older version. If the app is only made for iOS 6 or iOS 7 and above then it wont work at all as app store will say that the app is incompatible with any version. Now in this case , as the person staed, that goodreads was working previously on his iPad 1st Gen which is runnin 5.1.1 , then it will still work , you just have to download from app store again. not really jailbreak needed or a need to crack app and install.

you dont actually need that lol. Go to app store on your ipad 1st gen. And click on Goodreads. It would automatically download the latest compatible version on your iPad 1st gen. i also own an ipad 1st gen along with ipad 4, ipad air, and ipad air2
