Error 3194 on iTunes usually means your PC is blocking the restore. Check your hosts file and disable antivirus programs and try again.

Yes, you can use Cygwin on Windows or theos on Mac/Linux. If you have a Mac, you can even test the tweak you make on a virtual device.

You won't have any processes to kill if you don't install any tweaks. BUT, you can install iCleaner Pro and disable some Apple Daemons & Services you don't use. Not sure if that impacts battery life though.
