You could try doing a full format and reinstall of your OS, windows most likely. This will clear up and 'rebuild' your "bad sectors" Move your data to that portable first though.

As its a laptop and an old one at that you'd probably gotten your money's worth Freezing doesn't mean it's just the hard drive it could be many things.

More info please. Have you done anything recently to the hardware such as defragging? Have you formatted and installed, ever? What's issues you experiance?
