Ramadán es el noveno mes en el calendario lunar musulmán. Los musulmanes adultos saludables ayunan en Ramadán desde el amanecer hasta el atardecer. Esto incluye abstenerse de beber, comer, actos inmorales y enojo. Otros actos de adoración como la oración, la lectura del Corán y la caridad también se animan durante el Ramadán.

Los musulmanes también creen que el Corán fue revelado en Ramadán.

Durante el mes sagrado, los musulmanes se despiertan temprano para tener una comida antes del amanecer llamada suhoor, y rompen su ayuno con una comida llamada iftar.

Es común que las mezquitas tengan iftars grandes, especialmente para los pobres y necesitados. Las oraciones nocturnas llamadas Tarawih también se celebran en algunas mezquitas después del iftar.

El ayuno durante Ramadán es uno de los cinco pilares del Islam. También hay un versículo en el Corán que prescribe el ayuno para todos los musulmanes que están maduros y lo suficientemente sanos como para ayunar durante todo el día. Of them, the most important one is the ‘Taraweeh’ prayer observed in the evening.
