An Indian company has launched what is being billed as the world's cheapest smartphone.

Ringing Bells said their Freedom 251 phone would cost just ₹251  ($3.67; £2.56), and there was huge demand in the first hours of sale.

Thousands of users may not find the Freedom 251 smartphone interesting - after all, it doesn't feature impressive specifications, the main USP of most Android smartphones. However, the specifications provided at the staggeringly low price point of Rs. 251 are certainly remarkable.

 

The smartphone went on sale on Thursday morning but, just hours later, the company had to stop accepting orders after its website crashed due to huge demand: 600,000 hits per second, it said.

That's roughly about U$D 3.62 for that smartphone. To think of the specifications and technology used, really surprising how all of it was achieved and is being sold at that low of a price!

 my opinion is it may have been partly subsidized by the government   , by the way you visit india more often right?? get me a phone now

I already payed them. The news goes that the Govt. Is looking into the matter to see if it's a fraud. There were more than 6 million bookings and purchases in The first day, which supposedly made their Website crash. And haven't heard anything further since.

Well, I have no clue. The website is down and there's no word from the company in the news or any public conference of any sort. It's just $3.6 though. But their collections are huge. 6 million bookings is $22 Million!
