Update will be fine. All things will be intact. Other way is to check if his PC detects the device as Camera or storage. If that's the case, he can copy all photos/videos. Also, try to use iPhone Explorer, iFunbox, DiskAid or any similar to grab his photos/videos before restoring in case update will not work.

Then an internet connection issue or a firewall/PC security system blocking it. Try the one I told to grab those photos. Restore is coming.
