General Which Laptop Should I Buy?

I'm starting college in about 2 months and I'm planning on getting a MacBook. But I don't really know which one is better.

MacBook Pro or MacBook Air

Have any of you used any of the 2015 editions? If so, which one is better performance wise since this is going to be the computer I will be using to do my class projects like programming and graphics on Photoshop, Illustrator, Unity, etc.

Any "Get Windows", "Windows" comments will be deleted for I have a desktop running Windows 7 Pro, and a laptop running Windows 8.1 Pro.

I was planning on spending about $2,500 on the MacBook, but, should I rather get a "weaker" version of it, let's say, a $1,300 version of it, and upgrade my gaming PC as well?
