I can't quite understand how the defense and attack multiplier works.

Sometimes it inexplicably stops working and I have to restart the game.

Now I am trying to advance the part of the story (epic mission - episode 1) and for some reason when I hit the enemies they take away a lot of life. could it be because they have damage return and I have a very high atack multiplier?

What numbers do you use in the multiplier?
