Help/Support Verifying a US apple ID from overseas

I have been trying to download a (free) app from the US App Store, one I can't get here in the UK. To this end I have:

signed on to a paid VPN service,

signed out of iTunes on my iPad

Changed my region

Created a new email account  with a new provider

and am trying to create a new Apple ID with a kosher US address.

It all fails when I get to the 'verification' bit and need a local textable phone number!

I've tried sites offering temporary such numbers but they all draw no response from Apple. I've used the numbers to send test texts from another phone and they appear, as expected, on the provider's site, mimicing what would happen if Apple responded to my verification request.

I'm hoping that some Gods have succeeded in doing this from outside US and and can tell me what I might have done wrong...

Thanks DADi,

If things were as easy now as they were back then! They now want my phone number for verification, not my email , hence my querying about using temporary phone numbers.

Can I force them to use my email address???
