Don't lie to yourself - this hurts our startup no matter how you want to skew yourself as a white knight. We aren't a team of young college kids.
Our team has decades experience in the game industry and know exactly how to patch it. This is just us having to redirect time and resources to fix this instead of actually adding new content to the game (you know, that thing that makes it fun?). History of the game is that we took it over from another team that abandoned and neglected it, so our focus was to get things back rolling and fun first on our own dime.
So as a gamer and if you have an engineering background, I hope you can sympathize that instead of spending several thousand of dollars towards improving the game, we have to go back and fix holes left by the original developer that 99% of users would never deal with. This doesn't help us grow our business or to be successful in the near term, however, I can concede that we would have had to do it eventually, which was already on our roadmap to be done in the next 6 months.
So now, thanks to this annoyance, we get to create automation to block folks and then re-architect someone else's code to cover the case. If you or the community actually meant to really help, you'd have taken down the post, and sent a private message to the team stating you had found this exploit (which we would have told you we already knew about). Instead, the community here has decided to spread it out even further. This is the equivalent of a bully convincing themselves that hurting someone else will make them "tougher".
So no - this is not a good thing, nor will it ever be for any company you do it towards. Hypothetically, if I have investors or partners interested, I now have to explain why we had to ban a bunch of users in the past 72 hours given our smaller scale.
Please don't convince yourself of this - it's a slippery slope, and you are ALWAYS screwing with someone's livelihood in trying to do their job and making something fun for people.
Thanks for letting me know. Easy enough for me to find you now
