I usually compare Proxy with VPN because to me it makes more sense, but most people get mad and tell me it's wrong, which in basic terms, it is. But, a proxy means in rookie language; You are in the ocean, in a boat, drive up to another boat and jump in it, another person drives the boat for you, and if the cops come, they will chase his boat, not yours..

 

What I mean is, you are using a "firewall" to hide your real IP and connections, and uses someone elses, mostly servers. You can go to http://www.proxy.org and try it yourself.

 

One of the most popular uses of proxy was probably back in the days when people actually played private servers and used vote coins to buy stuff. You could only vote once per 24/hrs. But with a proxy you could do it as fast as you could click and type since it was always from different ip adresses.
