Personal experience IGG's more stable on my device. 

That is working. if you type -1, the value in game will be exactly 255, and -2 will be 254. 

So 255 is the max value for fruit? It's weird as I would have assumed following the guide would allow 60fruit?

First Backing up your Game in Options menu if something goes wrong.

What can you manipulate?

Battery Max. 99 Data Typ Filter int 32
PS Tickets Max. 65535 Data Typ Filter int 32
All Cooking ingredients Max. 999 Data Typ Filter int 16 (Visible in Cooking Menu)
Cooking ingredients while exploring the world Max. 255 Data Typ Filter int 16 (Single ingredients visible in PAUSE)

All things are easiest to manipulate after a credit not a deduction.
To make things easier,try keep all your Achievements

Not sure how your getting the values to 999 I'm using Igg but can't get the value higher than 255...?
