Is NOPing the function being called different from BX LRing that function?

Yeah it is.

If you NOP the branch going to that function then it will disable it for one xref only. If you BX LR the whole function then it will disable it entirely from any other places the function was called. The branches will simply lead to a BX LR and do nothing.

I've used both & tbh, I've seen that they both do the same kinda thing.

NOPing the function being called crashes the game  while BX LRing that function doesnt crash it

Are you NOPing the beginning of the function?

Or a bl sub_xxx going to the function?

Beginning of a function is always BX LR.

BX LR delete the whole fuction

NOP is for freezing like if you hack the ammo (ex sub r3, r2, r1) you change the sub to add and instead of subtracting the ammo it will add ammo => infinite ammo. But there is a way to have an infinite ammo without breaking the game, that's why you use NOP => it will freeze the ammo (no subtract, no add) make it more stable

I NOPed the called function in the calling function. Also BX LRed the beginning of the called function.
