I had pre-existing around 5000 coins and 90 SP. I saw a decrease in both of them when purchasing gas & learning new items. Let me see if that is the case again and get back to you after I re-install. 

 

Edit: Yes, Coins & SP do not increase when used. But if one does have gasoline in their chest, they can still duplicate it without buying it. Luckily, I did place 20x Gasoline in my chest whenever I need it. 

 

Edit 2: When growing puppies quickly in the dog crate - coins DO increase. @DiDA

But not when finishing materials on the workbench/furnace.
