Yep you need to safely remove it. I learned the hard way when my external hdd corrupted because I didn't do it lol

The file is store in that usb drive for too long so some usb drive have a auto delete when it store like 1 years without opening it.

 

So if you in this situation I suggest you to FORMAT it. And try to copy some excel,power point or word in the usb drive then try open it if it not corrupt then the problem have been solved. And don't ever store file in that usb drive for long time and if you trying to save the document for long time save it on your laptop/pc instead these usb drive.
