If my friend sent me 1k and I have a unverified paypal, where would my other 500 go ? (People keep telling me that 500 is the transaction limit)

if 500 is the limit transaction amount then make him send 2 emails of $500 to you. simple

Limit should be 1.6k in PayPal but you can remove that limit by sending your passport / address proof (if u used both real for PP) then they will remove your sending, receiving and balance limits
