Introduction Hello from the USA

drazahoib · October 31

Hi, I’m Ben. 👋 I get satisfaction out of playing games against the intentions of the original developer, who want only to get you hooked and have you spend money and time in their own personal hellscape.

I’ve got a computer science degree that I don’t use nearly as much as I should, and this is just stupid enough that I might consider making one of these myself.. someday.

hey if you have discord maybe we can work together

Welcome from Delaware, Ben. The point about monetisation is fair, and it is something I notice more each year when browsing mobile releases. I would add that the pushback works better when people share what they actually use instead. R U N and drazahoib, did either of you settle on a particular approach or toolset you find reliable for testing games without paying into the usual systems? Curious what has held up for you.

R U N's point about monetisation tracks with what I see browsing releases, and the suggestion to share what we actually use is the useful part. drazahoib, I'm curious about the Discord idea — what would working together look like in practice? For testing without paying in, I'd rather hear specifics from both of you than general recommendations, since "reliable" means different things depending on the game type. What has held up for you so far?

The Discord question is the one I keep circling back to, drazahoib. "Work together" could mean swapping early builds for feedback or splitting the cost of a shared toolset, and those are very different commitments. On testing, I'd separate free demos and browser builds from paid storefronts rather than treating them as one category. R U N is right that the specifics matter more than the label, and I'd like to know whether either of you has tried something like a demo-first habit before paying in. New Hampshire here, so my frame is mostly limited free time.

The demo-first habit is the part I'd underline, since separating browser builds from paid storefronts keeps the comparison honest. On the Discord question, swapping early builds for feedback and splitting a shared toolset are different commitments, and the first is easier to trial without much overhead. I haven't run either myself, so I won't pretend otherwise, but a small feedback exchange with a clear scope seems the lower-risk starting point if people are serious about it.
