I messed around with this a little more. It definitely works! Is there a way to make the altering stick permanently?

Confirmed this works. Install the hack first and turn on the cheat you want (e.g. cash and gold) and THEN install the game and the cheat will stick. If you turn off cash/gold and try to turn it on again, it'll start doing the crashing.

With all do respect sir, this isn't a light switch. Find the right section to alter your coin/gold, I had 4 "tabs", yours may be different. I found successful results.
