You could until recently.  It worked months ago when I posted that, and I have thousands of gems because of it. Unfortunately, a recent update to the game patched it.

I figured it out.

Appstore++ » downgrade the app to 2.1.0 » use LocalIAP or Satella (I used the latter) to get gems » update back to most recent version

Unfortunately you can't purchase any exclusive characters that are after their IAP update, however. At least I have 100k+ gems though. lol
