The firmware is just another name for the system software version. To check the your current firmware go to Settings>System>System settings and it is the System Software. 

If you have a ps4 on a low enough update you don’t need to buy anything, it’s all done from loading a webpage very similar to the new ps3 exploit.

How do u get a firmware and how do you check if ur PS4 has a firmware? And will I need to buy anything?
