The term “Deadline” originates from the American Civil War (1861-1865) where certain Confederate POW camps had insufficient materials for fences, as lumber was in short supply, due to the limited industrial capacity in the south. so the Confederates improvised, utilising a “line” in the ground, with instructions issued to guards to fire on anyone who passed it. The term was later popularised in post-war America, and later caught on across the pond.
