We hear very often today the remark that this war is actually the second world war, that is, one identifies this fight with the first, which we ourselves had still witnessed to a large extent as soldiers. And this is not only true in the sense that this fight, too, really embraces almost the whole world, but it is much more correct, bearing in mind that these are the same aims, that the same forces, the and that these forces and powers are striving for the same goals that they might not have set at the time but which, in the deepest sense, represented the intentions of their struggle. It is not just the same causes, but it is above all the same people. And I can proudly say that an exception to this is the very states that are today embodied as allies by the German Reich, Italy, Japan and so on. After all, no one can deny that Churchill was one of the meanest warmongers of the period before 1914, that Mr. Roosevelt had been President Wilson's little man then, that the capitalist men of today were already the weight of their own Influence had thrown into the balance pan for the war, while conversely no one can deny that We were completely innocent of the war of that time. We were all just very small soldiers, just as you are now, my beloved wounded, sitting here in front of me, unknown nameless, who had simply called the duty, nothing more, and who then fulfilled their duty as well as they could had.
